Buying power in a competitive market

In much of Texas, commercial customers in the ERCOT competitive market can choose a Retail Electric Provider for the energy commodity while the local utility still delivers power over the wires. Prices and contract terms vary by product type—fixed, indexed, or hybrid—and by your facility's load shape and risk tolerance.

Momentum Energy Services helps commercial clients evaluate electricity and natural gas strategies, along with related services such as energy efficiency, tax exemption and rebates, demand side management, and billing & tariff analysis.

Regulatory details and eligibility depend on your utility territory. This section is educational, not legal advice.

Texas commercial electricity & brokers

What is a commercial energy broker or consultant?
In Texas, Aggregators, Brokers, and Consultants (often called ABCs) are intermediaries that help customers evaluate retail electricity (and often natural gas) options. They do not take title to the power the way a Retail Electric Provider (REP) does. Brokers and consultants can help compare offers and contract structures.
Is most of Texas a deregulated electricity market?
Much of Texas is in the competitive ERCOT market, where eligible commercial customers can choose a Retail Electric Provider rather than buying supply only from a single monopoly utility. Some areas of Texas remain outside full retail choice. Your premises' utility territory determines whether you can shop competitive supply.
Will my power go out if I switch retail providers?
In competitive areas, switching REPs typically changes who supplies and bills the energy commodity—not who delivers power over the wires. Delivery remains with the local transmission and distribution utility. Routine switches are designed so service continues; exact timing depends on your meter cycle and the REP/utility process.
What is a Letter of Authorization (LOA)?
An LOA is a customer authorization that lets an authorized broker or consultant request usage history and related account data needed to price your load accurately. Signing an LOA is not the same as signing an energy supply contract.
Fixed vs indexed electricity products — what's the difference?
Fixed rates can secure a set price per unit when budget certainty matters. Indexed products can move with market/futures conditions and, in some structures, may be converted toward fixed pricing at chosen times. Hybrid approaches can lock a portion of volume and leave a remainder floating. The right mix depends on your risk tolerance and load—not a one-size headline rate.
What should I send for a free evaluation?
A recent utility bill (or bills for each major meter), your facility addresses, and current contract end dates if you know them. That helps us understand how you use energy before discussing options. You can attach a bill PDF or photo on the contact form below.
